I am writing this letter in support of Ann Phong, an artitst who is applying for an Artists Opportunity Grant by the City of Santa Ana. I have become an admirer and collector of her work over many years. I have seen her growth and evolution as an artitst; and I am glad that more and more, she is getting well-deserved recognition as a gifted painter with important messages through her paintings; and as an art teacher. However, I still think her talent and important messages in her artworks need to be seen and appreciated by a much wider audience. Ann's artworks carried many messages, but her most profound concern and passion is the environment. Her messages about pollution and the environment is very important to me, a medical oncologist by profession; and my patients, who knows first hand the dire consequences of what pollution can do to human health. I think these messages need to be seen and felt by as many people as possible. I believe serious messages such as these reach people in more sublime and profound ways through artworks than through any other means. I applaud Ann for raising awareness of the effects of pollution on earth all living things; and for seeking to reach a wider audience by exhibiting in public places such as the John Wayne airport; I admire her wish to improve her understanding of global pollution problem by attending seminars and traveling to sites of serious pollution problems, from which she can gain wider and deeper knowledge and intuition that will in her own words in her application: "... integrate into my artworks and help me to reach to the audience a more profound way." I strongly recommend Ann Phong to your progam and I hope she will be awarded the grant she asked for. I am sure this grant will help in furthering the development of this inspiring artist.
