Zoo- <br />nosis, or disease transmission between species. <br />There are several persistent zoonotic diseases and <br />parasites that crop up in the United States(and are <br />often more frequent in warm climates). It's a good <br />idea to be familiar with the risks and symptoms of <br />each. <br />Recent studies show that 19% of dogs were <br />infected with hookworms and that 20% of public soil <br />samples were contaminated with intestinal parasite <br />eggs <br />The ascarid of cats, T. cati, can also cause <br />disease in humans. When the eggs are accidentally <br />ingested, they hatch, and infective -stage larvae mi- <br />grate through human liver, lungs, and other organs <br />and tissues where they produce damage and induce <br />allergic responses. Infection may leave children with <br />permanent visual or neurologic damage. <br />
