Outdoor Loading/Unloading SC-30
Description
The loading/unloading of materials usually takes place outside
on docks or terminals; therefore, materials spilled, leaked, or lost
during loading/unloading may collect in the soil or on other
surfaces and have the potential to be carried away by stormwater
runoff or when the area is cleaned. Additionally, rainfall may
wash pollutants from machinery used to unload or move
materials. Implementation of the following protocols will
prevent or reduce the discharge of pollutants to stormwater from
outdoor loading/unloading of materials.
Approach
Reduce potential for pollutant discharge through source control
pollution prevention and BMP implementation. Successful
implementation depends on effective training of employees on
applicable 13MPs and general pollution prevention strategies and
objectives.
Pollution Prevention
• Keep accurate maintenance logs to evaluate materials
removed and improvements made.
• Park tank trucks or delivery vehicles in designated areas so
that spills or leaks can be contained.
• Limit exposure of material to rainfall whenever possible.
• Prevent stormwater run-on.
• Check equipment regularly for leaks.
Objectives
• Cover
• Contain
• Educate
• Reduce/Minimize
• Product Substitution
Targeted Constituents
Sediment
✓
Nutrients
✓
Trash
Metals
✓
Bacteria
Oil and Grease
✓
Organics
✓
SQA
crxarnm
s[r
011"I r
A{fYcl MM
]anuary 2003 California Stormwater BMP Handbook 1 of 4
Industrial and Commercial
www.cabmphandbooks.com
