Design for Children and Youth Historic and Cultural Landscapes
MIG has researched and documented how
appropriate design and programming can
support the developmental and educational
needs of children and youth. We find the greatest
satisfaction in creating places where young people
exercise their minds and their bodies in countless
adventures. The environments we have created
serve as educational resources, providing play
and learning opportunities through direct contact
with the natural world. In addition, our certified
playground safety inspectors have the most
comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge on
safety issues, including hazard identification and
risk management.
Placemaking
Simply put, thriving places perform. Thriving places
are a mix of the organic, the created, and the
energy that comes from being used. Ultimately,
success is measured by the ability to encourage
healthy social activity, which is basic to all other
outcomes, including economic growth.
MIG's design approach evolves out of an interaction
with the place. Our designs tell stories that are
unique and specific to site context. We utilize
the idea of placemaking, which is more than an
assemblage of buildings, plantings, and public
spaces. Placemaking is intentional and encourages
both social interaction and community identity to
create meaningful spaces. It develops places where
individuals feel like integral participants in their
surroundings.
MIG has specific resource area expertise in cultural
landscape preservation planning and design for
a variety of landscape types, including historic
designed landscapes, historic sites, and vernacular
landscapes. Our work is guided by the principle
that landscape preservation requires managing,
rather than halting, change. Project types include
Cultural Landscape Reports, Master Plans, Cultural
Landscape Inventories, and National Historic
Preservation Act/National Environmental Protection
Act Section 106 Compliance.
Santa Ana became incorporated as a city in 1886,
and may have historic and cultural landscapes that
require special consideration.
Universal Design and Accessibility
As a nationally -recognized leader in universal
design, MIG incorporates accessibility and universal
design concepts into every project.
