.d4 <br />A-66 <br />MARKHAM ELEMENTARY LIVING SCHOOLYARD <br />Promoting Outdoor Play in a Sustainable Landscape <br />The Markham Elementary School project is a collaborative team effort Location <br />between the Trust for Public Land (TPL), Oakland Unified School District Oakland, California <br />(OUSD) and Markham Elementary community. Located in Oakland's <br />Size <br />industrial district, the schoolyard and surrounding neighborhood suffer <br />1.15 acres <br />from poor air quality, noise pollution and a general lack of green space. <br />Client <br />A priority for this project was to create a living schoolyard that promotes <br />TheTrustfor Public Land <br />outdoor play in a hardy, sustainable and safe landscape. <br />Date Completed <br />Phase 1 Summer 2019; <br />Place Works worked with TPL to transform underutilized asphalt play Phase 2June 2021 <br />courts at the school into a living schoolyard with major features <br />construction cost <br />that include an outdoor classroom, numerous nature play areas, an <br />$500,000 <br />expanded community garden, and an orchard that offers students <br />Services Provided <br />opportunities for outdoor education and experience working in <br />Landscape Architecture, community <br />the garden. Based on design ideas developed in a comprehensive <br />Outreach, Environmental Education <br />and Nature Play, schoolyard Retrofit <br />community -outreach process, Place Works developed a site master plan <br />and construction documents. Phase 1 of the project was completed in <br />the summer of 2019 and included the expanded garden space, the fruit <br />tree orchard, and the shaded seating area. <br />® PLACEWORKS <br />
