Mendez Tribute Monument Park <br />In a collaborative effort between MIG, artist Ignacio <br />Gomez, the City of Westminster, and Orange <br />County Department of Education, Westminster <br />developed a tribute park, monument and trail <br />honoring Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, plaintiffs <br />in the 1946 landmark desegregation Mendez vs. <br />Westminster civil rights case. It preceded the <br />famous U.S. Supreme Court 1954 Brown vs. Board <br />of Education decision of national desegregation of <br />public education. <br />The .02- acre site features sculptures of the Mendez <br />parents and their two children taking the first step <br />into the school they had been denied to attend. <br />Improvements include a park plaza with seating and <br />an interactive station with interpretive panels and <br />augmented reality features to share the Mendez <br />story with visitors. The site provides a variety <br />of active recreation including: lighted fields for <br />soccer, baseball and softball; children' play areas; <br />in -ground skate park; perimeter jogging/wa I king <br />trail, restroorn concession building, picnic facilities, <br />maintenance building and yard. A cooperative <br />development includes a YMCA building and pool <br />complex centrally located in the park. Sports fields <br />are synthetic turf to reduce operational costs and <br />conserve water.
