M <br />NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS <br />Neighborhood parks are small parks intended <br />to serve nearby neighbors. These sites provide <br />small-scale opportunities for play, picnicking <br />and leisure activities for residents that live within <br />walking or biking distance. Typical facilities <br />include playgrounds, picnic tables and open lawn <br />areas. Sports fields, sports courts and trailheads <br />also may be located within neighborhood parks <br />to provide opportunities for local recreation. <br />SITE CHARACTER & ADJACENCIES <br />• Neighborhood parks may be tucked into <br />neighborhoods, accessible only by foot or <br />bicycle. <br />• Pedestrian and bicycle -oriented wayfinding <br />and visibility are important to supporting <br />access and safe use. <br />• Parks should not be located adjacent to busy <br />arterial routes unless uses are buffered from <br />traffic and noise. <br />SIZE & CONFIGURATION <br />• Typically 1-5 acres in size <br />• Ideally minimum of 2 acres for new sites <br />• Contiguous, non -linear usable shape <br />• At least 90% of the site should be relatively <br />level and developable for recreation uses <br />ACCESS <br />• Access from local or collector streets <br />• Sidewalks should connect to park paths for <br />walkers <br />• May be located along a trail, bike route or <br />bikeway <br />PRIORITIZED RECREATION ELEMENTS <br />• Play area, ages 2-5 and 5-12 <br />• Open lawn area <br />• Active recreation use (sports courts, outdoor <br />fitness equipment, skate spot, and/or youth <br />sports practice field) <br />• Family -size or small group picnic area <br />• Seating area <br />ADDITIONAL RECREATION ELEMENTS TO <br />CONSIDER <br />• Other small-scale active recreation resources <br />(climbing wall, ping pong tables, chess or <br />game tables, horseshoe pits, etc.) <br />• Outdoor fitness equipment <br />• Natural areas, but not throughout the entire <br />site <br />Exhibit 1 <br />• Looped path or tricycle track <br />PRIORITIZED SUPPORT AMENITIES <br />• On -street parking or angle -in parking; small <br />parking lot for larger sites <br />• Facility access paths <br />• Perimeter path or sidewalks <br />• Tables, seating, drinking fountain, bike racks, <br />trash receptacles, and dog waste stations <br />• Shade (trees, shelters, canopies, sails) <br />• Park identification signage near main parking <br />lot, street entry, or visible frontage <br />LANDSCAPING & VEGETATION <br />• Trees for shade, habitat, and seasonal interest <br />• Drought -tolerant landscaping with drip <br />irrigation, in accordance with WELO <br />(California's Water Efficient Landscape <br />Ordinance). <br />• Manicured sports fields and lawn areas for <br />informal play <br />ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS <br />• Avoid community, citywide, or regional scale <br />facilities <br />• Avoid lighted sports fields <br />• High -noise uses (e.g., basketball courts) <br />should be situated away from nearby housing <br />0 SANTA ANA PARKS MASTER PLAN APPENDICES <br />
