DIAZ•YOURMAN
& ABSOCIAxes
-10 G6.4dil"I S
drain. DYA's tasks consisted of reviewing existing data and summarizing our engineering analyses, which
provided estimates of additional lateral stresses on the storm drain using simplified methods, additional
lateral stresses on the storm drain using finite element analyses, and evaluation of various ground
improvement schemes to reduce the additional lateral stresses, including deep soil mixing and chemical
grout injection. DYA provided recommendations on the improvement of the subgrade in the LRT's right-
of-way. Mr. Sandoval provided construction observation during the ground improvement. Measurements
during construction confirmed DYA's calculations.
LAX Design/Build New Central Utility Plant (CUP) Construction Services, Los Angeles, CA — Project
engineer for observation services during construction for shoring; earthwork (excavation and recompaction
of existing uncertified fill, and backfill of deepened spread footings for replacement CUP); foundations
(deepened spread footings for replacement CUP and cast -in -drilled -hole [CIDH] pile foundations for
replacement cooling towers/maintenance building); and utility trenches for conduit connecting replacement
CUP to the replacement cooling towers/maintenance building and to the City of Los Angeles Department
of Water and Power (LADWP) IS2299 station. Mr. Sandoval provided construction observation during
shoring, site preparation, excavation of uncertified fill, placement of fill and backfill, compaction,
foundation installation, and prepared reports.
Empire Avenue / Buena Vista Grade Separation Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Backfill
Construction, Burbank, CA — Project engineer for construction observation and testing services for two
horizontal directional drills (HDD) to reroute underground utilities on the Empire Avenue / Buena Vista
Grade Separation project that was combined with the widening of Interstate 5 by Caltrans. The HDDs were
approximately 800 feet long and 40 feet deep and 2,800 feet long and 60 feet deep. DYA had previously
performed a field investigation and laboratory testing to provide recommendations for the HDDs. Mr.
Sandoval performed the field services.
Northridge Fashion Center Yard House and Exterior Plaza, Northridge, CA — Project engineer for
observation and testing during earthwork at the Northridge Fashion Center Yard House Exterior Plaza. The
improvements to an existing retail shopping mall included improvements to a building space for a
restaurant, a vehicle tunnel and ramp with Portland cement concrete (PCC) slab -on grade, ramp retaining
walls, backfill of an old basement, landscape areas, light -pole foundations, runoff retention and infiltration
system, a grease interceptor tank, and excavation and miscellaneous grading excavations and backfills for
plumbing, electrical utility lines, concrete flatwork, landscape, and hardscape (cuts and fills less than
2 feet). The purpose of DYA's services during construction was to check that the soils exposed were
consistent with the soil conditions upon which DYA's recommendations were based and to check that the
construction operations were performed in a manner consistent with the intent of the plans, specifications,
City of Los Angeles grading code, and DYA's Design Report. Mr. Sandoval provided geotechnical
observation and testing during construction.
Rear Berths 136-139, Terminal Buildings Construction, Port of Los Angeles, CA — Field engineer
during construction of the buildings and pedestrian bridge. DYA provided geotechnical investigation
services at this site, including a field investigation and recommendations for construction. The Port of Los
Angeles (POLA) wanted DYA to be the geotechnical engineer of record and to prepare the compaction and
pile driving/installation observation reports for City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety
(LADB&S) approval. Mr. Sandoval served as the registered deputy inspector to observe the POLA staff
perform field density testing; observe the earthwork at building and pedestrian bridge locations; and observe
the foundation excavations for shallow and mat foundations for buildings. Mr. Sandoval was also on site
for the pile driving/installation.
