E-comment , Mayors and council members, I'm extremely frustrated and disappointed in the failure to back the resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. Many council members' commented that Santa Ana political happenings can't change or impact happenings elsewhere in the world. This is simply untrue. When we see injustice and actually stand against it, we embolden our own resolve to stand against injustice here in our own city. We preserve our humanity in the face of a society and a world that tells us to look away. Not only that, but our tax dollars are funding Israel's continued (for over 75+ years) aggression against Palestinians. Experts around the world say people are being killed in Gaza more quickly than in even the deadliest moments of the U.S.-led attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan, which were themselves widely criticized by human rights groups. Many genocide experts have openly called this crisis an ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing. Many of us in Santa Ana come from Latino backgrounds and have been outsiders in the US, until building a home here in Santa Ana. It escapes me how so many members can stand in lockstep with discrimination and ongoing colonial violence in a city so predominantly of color. Santa Ana, as a city that has always been at the forefront of social justice, it is imperative that the council take a stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an end to the senseless bloodshed. I URGE you to reconsider your position, to hold onto your humanity, and to agendize to vote in favor of a resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people in Gaza. By doing so, Santa Ana will reaffirm its commitment to upholding the principles of humanity, justice, and peace. 1
