Alcala, Abigail
From:Afiya Yamani <noreply@adv.actionnetwork.org>
Sent:Tuesday, December 19, 2023 2:15 PM
To:eComment
Subject:Supporting a Permanent Ceasefire
E-comment ,
It is with a heavy heart that I express my disappointment in the recent decision to vote against
this crucial resolution to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian People in Support of a
Ceasefire. I am writing to you as a concerned member of the community to urge your support.
Towns and cities are being destroyed; houses leveled to the ground. Last week, UN officials
reported that 1.9 million people have been displaced. That’s the equivalent of 60% of Orange
County’s population. Imagine what a crisis it would be if everyone in Irvine, Santa Ana,
Anaheim, Orange, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Garden Grove, Fullerton, Huntington Beach,
and Costa Mesa had been displaced from their homes. This is clearly a humanitarian crisis.
Based on the criteria offered in article 2 of the Genocide Convention, it is also clearly a
genocide, and it is being funded by our tax dollars. We need to act now, and we urge you to
maintain a pro-justice stance and support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Santa Ana, as a city that has always been at the forefront of social justice, it is imperative that
the council take a stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an end to the
senseless bloodshed.
The decision to reject the ceasefire resolution is not just a political matter; it is a moral
imperative. We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian people, nor can we
allow political rhetoric to overshadow the urgent need for peace and justice. It is our collective
responsibility to ensure that Santa Ana city does not condone or support any form of violence
or oppression, especially when communities here risk attacks and hate crimes for supporting
Palestine.
I implore you to reconsider your position and to get this important issue on the agenda
immediately. By doing so, Santa Ana will reaffirm its commitment to upholding the principles
of humanity, justice, and peace.
1
