r
This Quranic principle guarantees the right to open protest for all victims of injustice
or tyranny. As the verse sloes not indicate any limitations, this right is not limited
only to individuals. Therefore if a group of people usurps power, and after assuming
the reins of authority begin to tyrannize individuals or groups of 1nen or the entire
population, then to raise the voice of protest against it openly is the Cod -given right
of man and no one has the authority to usurp or delly this right. [al-MaudlEdi)
4. A MusIim's Right to Freedom of Expression
a) There is no tslamic scripture that forbids the freedom of expression, limits it to
certain extents, or suppresses it by any means, since The Holy Quran puts no
restrictions on the freedoin of expression whatsoever, to the extent that even Satan is
allowed to speak openly, The Quran says:
We have indeed established you on earth and provided you with a means of
livelihood. 'Yet' you seldom give any thanks. Surely We created you, then shaped
your, then said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam," so they all did —but not
Iblis (Satan), who refused to prostrate with the others. Allah asked, "What
prevented you ftom prostrating when I commanded your?" He replied, "I ant better
than he is: Your created rite from fire and hint ,from clay." Allah said, "Thera get
down from Paradise! It is not for you to be arrogartt here. So get out! You are
truly one of the disgraced." [The Holy Quran, 7: 10-18]
He (Satan) appealed, "Then delay my end until the Day of their resurrection."
Allah said, "You are delayed `until the appointed Day'."
If Iblis, or Satan, is given the freedom to speak up and try to convince people
with his views, then one can easily conclude that ordinary people have the
freedom to do so in Islamic teachings. Ordinary people supposedly are not as
strong or mighty as Iblis, and they pose a modest danger to the system or the
regime compared with the danger Iblis might pose.
