CITY OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />STANDARD SPECIFICATION NUMBER 102. <br /> <br />Asphaltic Concrete Base. <br /> <br />SECTION 1. DESCRIPTION. <br /> <br /> Upon a subgrade, as hereinbefore specified, an asphaltic concrete base course of such <br /> width and cross-section as shown on the plans shall be laid in accordance with the follow- <br /> ing specifications. <br /> <br />SECTION 2. THICKNESS. <br /> <br /> The thickness of the base shall be as shown on the plans and shall be held to be its <br /> minimum thickness after compression. <br /> <br />SECTION 3. COiVIPOSITION. <br /> <br /> The asphaltic concrete base shall be composed of asphalt cement, broken stone or <br /> gravel, sand and stone dust as hereinbefore specified, in the following proportions, by weight: <br /> <br /> Per cent <br /> Asphaltic Cement ................................................................................................................................ 4 to 6 <br /> Passing a ten (10) mesh screen ................................................................................................... 20 to 30 <br /> Passing a one-fourth (~) inch screen and retained on a ten (10) mesh screen ........ 8 to 14 <br /> Passing a one-half (~) inch screen and retained on a one-fourth (z~) inch screen....10 to <br /> Passing a one (1) inch screen and retained on a one-hal{ (~) inch screen ............... 25 to <br /> Passing a two (2) inch screen and retained on a one (1) inch screen .......................... <br /> <br /> Materials passing a ten (10) mesh screen shall conform to the following proportions, <br /> by weight: <br /> <br /> Per cent <br /> Passing a two hundred (200) mesh screen .............................................................................. 5 to 10 <br /> Passing an eighty (80) mesh screen and retained on a two hundred (200) mesh <br /> screen ..................................................................................................................................... 20 to 35 <br /> Passing a forty (40) mesh screen and retained on an eighty (80) mesh screen........35 to 45 <br /> Passing a ten (10) mesh screen and retained on a forty (40) mesh screen ................. -90 to 30 <br /> <br />SECTION 4. MIXINO. <br /> (a) The asphalt cement shall be heated in kettles or t~nks designed to secure uniform <br /> heating of the entire contents, and shall be brought to a temperature of not less than two <br /> hundred fifty (250) degrees Fahrenheit to not more than three hundred twenty-five <br /> degrees Fahrenheit. <br /> <br /> (b) The coarse and fine aggregate for asphaltic concrete base mixture shall be dried <br /> and heated at the paving plant in suitably designed revolving driers. They shall be heated <br /> to a temperature of not less than two hundred twenty-five (225) degrees Fahrenheit to not <br /> more than three hundred twenty-five (325) degrees Fahrenheit as determined on the mixing <br /> platform. The temperature shall be taken in the bins. The aggregates may be simul- <br /> taneously fed into the same drier, but in that case they shall be, immediately after heating, <br /> screened into at least four (4) different sizes and stored in separate bins. <br /> <br /> (c) Each batch shall be combined and mixed as follows: <br /> <br /> The coarse and fine aggregates consisting of at least four (4) dil~erent sizes shall be <br /> separately and accurately weighed by means of multiple beam scales, or dial scales, <br /> <br /> <br />
