Hot asphalt cement shall be uniformly squeezed <br />over the surface of the p~vement at the rate of from two tenths <br />(8.2) to three tenths (0.3) gallon per square yard or such <br />quantity within those limitm ss the Superintendent of Streets <br />may direct. <br /> <br /> The Asphalt Cement shall be heated in kettles or <br />tanks designed to secure uniform heating of the entire contents <br />and shall be brought to a temperature of 275 to 325 degrees <br />Fahrenheit as determined by the Superintendent of Streets and <br />shall be a~plied to the surfaco course of the pavement only <br />when the same is t!~oroughly dry end the air temperature in <br />the shade is at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit. <br /> <br /> (b) After the asphalt cement has been squeezed over <br />the surface of the pavement and while it is still warm, dry <br />intermediate aggregate sba]] be broadcasted over the same and <br />rolled until thoroughly bonded to the pavement. As required, <br />additional intermediate aggregate shall be spread and broomed <br />over the surface of the pavement during rolling in sufficient <br />quantity to take up all excess of asphalt cement. Upon comple- <br /> <br /> of the pavement, however, only a very light covering of <br /> <br /> intermediate a~gregate shall be ailowed to remain on the <br /> <br /> The intermediate ag2regate above referred to shall <br />conform to the requirements for crushed stone hereinbefore <br />specified and sl~all in addition thereto, comply with the follow- <br />ing sized ~md proportions by weight: <br /> <br />Passing a one-half (½) inch screen not less th~ ---95 per cmmt. <br />?sssin~ a one-quarter (~) inch screen not more ~hsn-15 per cent. <br />SECTION 10. SURFACE. <br /> <br /> The final surface shall be smooth ~nd free from in- <br />equalities ~nd eb~]~ wry, on the ~eneral surface of the street, <br />not ~ore than one-fourth (~) inch from ~n eight foot straight <br />edge l~id para]]el to the center line of the street, except st <br />grade breaks. And when wearing surface forms the gutter, all <br />gutters shall be made to drain and shall not vary ~ore than <br />one-fourth (~) inch from a sixteen (16~ foot straight edge <br />laid in the flow line of the gutter. Surface not iu ~onformity <br />with this requirement sha~l be ~emoved and new surface laid. <br />Ironing and burning down of hi~h places with hot irons except <br />in the flow lines of the gutters will not be permitted. <br />SECTION II. PROTECTION OM PAVWMENT. <br /> <br /> If, at the time of layin~ asphaltic concrete wearing <br />surface mixture, side supports, such as curbs, ~utters or <br />pavements do not e×ist, headers sba~l be set true to line and <br />grade.
