<br />Resolution 2022-XXX <br />Page 1 of 2 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION 2022-XXX <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SANTA ANA IN SUPPORT OF A COMMEMORATIVE U.S. <br />POSTAGE STAMP IN HONOR OF MUHAMMAD ALI <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service honors extraordinary individuals who <br />have contributed to American society, history, culture, or environment through the <br />issuance of commemorative postage stamps; and <br />WHEREAS, the stamp program was created to commemorate positive <br />contributions to American life, history, and culture; and <br />WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali clearly has contributed to American society, history, <br />AND culture as a singular and renowned figure in and transcending sports, civil rights, <br />peace, activism, freedom of thought and faith, global influence, and humanitarianism; and <br />WHEREAS, as an athlete, Ali was the 1960 Olympic light heavyweight boxing gold <br />medalist, three-time heavyweight champion of the world, and Sports Illustrated Athlete of <br />the 20th century; and <br />WHEREAS, as a humanitarian, Ali fought against injustices for many <br />disadvantaged groups of all backgrounds; and <br />WHEREAS, as a world figure, Ali utilized his fame and influence to promote social <br />change for the improvement of lives of all people; and <br />WHEREAS, as a thinker and a doer, Ali promoted confidence, dedication, respect <br />and love for all people; and <br />WHEREAS, as a role model Ali left us with lessons that packed pathos, humor and <br />truth, such as "A man who has no imagination has no wings," and "He who is not <br />courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life," and "I wish people would <br />love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world," and "You lose <br />nothing when fighting for a cause," and "My principles are more important than the money <br />or my title"; and <br />WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali also once said "I should be a postage stamp. That's <br />the only way I'll ever get licked." <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Santa <br />Ana as follows: <br /> <br />Section 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Ana hereby finds and declares <br />its support for and urges the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee of the U.S. Postal <br />Service to approve the issuance of a commemorative U.S. postage stamp honoring the <br />life and legacy of Muhammad Ali. <br />
