27 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 98-013 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF SOUTHERN <br />CALIFORNIA REGIONAL RAIL AUTHORITY FUNDING <br />REQUESTS TO THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION <br />COMMISSION IN 1998 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Metrolink, the passenger rail system operated by the Southern <br />California Regional Rail Authority, began operation on October 26, 1992 with 24 <br />daily trains serving eleven stations on three lines; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Metrolink has added on average a new train station and 10 <br />miles of railroad line every two months of its existence and today carries over <br />27,000 riders between 46 stations along 416 miles of track in the counties of Los <br />Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bemardino, Ventura, and San Diego; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Metrolink provides a convenient means of transportation for <br />residents throughout the region, reduces gridlock, improves air quality; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Metrolink now removes 18,500 automobile trips per day and <br />removes 8.5 percent of freeway traffic on parallel highways; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, additional funding is necessary to continue the rapid <br />expansion of the system to meet the needs of current and future passengers; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Senate of the State of California passed Senate Bill 45 in <br />1997 restructuring the funding of transportation projects and creating the <br />Interregional 10% Program and the Regional Choice Program; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Metrolink is asking that a request for funding of the purchase <br />of 30 additional commuter passenger cars and 5 locomotives be considered <br />eligible under the Interregiona110% Program. <br /> <br /> <br />
