The population of the City of Santa <br />Ana repreaents the largest perœntage of the County's total population. or <br />approximately 12 percent <br /> <br />Population growth in the City since 1990 abient a corresponding inaease in <br />housing units has led to a significant Increase in the average household size. <br />The 2003 average household size in the City was 4.6 persons per <br />household. This compares to 3.0 persons pet household for the County as a <br />whofe. Accordjng to the State Department of Finance. Santa Ana had the <br />highest average household size in the County in 2003. <br /> <br />Based on the 2000 US Census, the Citýs population is relatively young. with <br />127,603 persons (38 It) under 20 years old. This Isa greater percentage of <br />children than is the case for the County (which is 29.7 percent). This <br />condition is to be expected given the rate of natural population increase and <br />the high birth rate experienced within the City during the 1980's. Alto, 18,565 <br />persons (5.5 %) are over 65 years old.
