SUrrounding land use and. building design <br />provide a backgmund context for the landmark. reWorelng Its role as an <br />important visual element. Key design issues related to landmarks include I1e <br />following: <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Most of the existing landmarks in the CIty 8'8 concentrated along the <br />Santa Ana Freeway and In the downtown wfth relatively few In other <br />locations. A number of prominent Iandmartcs evoke very pleasant and <br />memorable experiences In ObServerS. Some of hse landmarks have <br />been in the City for many yeats, exhibiting a strong context that <br />enhances their visibility. Good examples of this include the old <br />Orange County Courthouse, located on Santa Ana Boulevard in the <br />downtown area, and the water tower along the santa Ana Freeway. <br /> <br />Other landmarks in the City are newer. though they still have <br />established 8 reputation as recogniZabJe landmarks. A good example <br />is the One Broadway Plaza, Xerox Center tower, Hotel Terrace, or <br />the VIetnamese CathoØc Community Center and Chapel located at <br />Seventeenth Street and Harbor Boulevard. In addition, most <br />neighborhoods have reference points which serve as local landmarks <br />in the community. These local landmartÅ“ generally include schools. <br />parks, church buildings. or even 8 welf.established oomer store. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Some -.ndmark$" stand out in their surroundings and act as good <br />reference points in people's minds; however, they may fall short of <br />conveying an image of community pride, historic significance, and <br />architectural quality. An example of a "perceived" landmark is the <br />radio antenna located next to I1e Santa Ana freeway. ThIs "1andma11<" <br />lacks architectutal significanÅ“ and attrac;tlve design features. <br />Nevertheless. It is generally considered a Ioc8 point of reference. <br /> <br />.~ <br />
