Under this temporary <br />appointment the Interim Police Chief may not exceed 960 hours in a calendar <br />year as the Interim Police Chief is a retired member of the California <br />Public Employees' Retirement System (CaIPERS). The temporary employment is <br />required because of the incumbent's specialized skills in law enforcement <br />and knowledge of the Santa Ana Police Department and community. <br /> <br />The California Government Code Section 21221 (h) provides that when an <br />appointment to a position is of a limited duration and is expected to <br />exceed 960 hours in any calendar year, the governing body may request <br />approval of the CalPERS Board of Administration to extend the temporary <br />employment beyond 960 hours in a calendar year. The subject action will <br />request the CalPERS Board of Administration to extend the temporary <br />employment of the Interim Police Chief to assist in the recruitment and <br />training of internal candidates to compete in the selection of a successor <br />Police Chief. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br /> <br />This action will have no fiscal impact. <br /> <br /> <br />Enriqu <br />Execut e Di tor <br />Personnel Services Department <br /> <br />558-1 <br />
