6. Weeds, Disease and Pest Control <br />a) Weed Control <br />All landscape and hardscape areas shall be kept free of weeds at all times. Weeds shall <br />be removed by hand and/or approved mechanical or chemical methods. Director may <br />dispatch City staff at Contractor's expense to remove weeds that reach two (2) inches or <br />greater and have not removed within one (1) week of the Director's request to Contractor <br />for removal. <br />b) Disease and Pest Control <br />(1) The Contractor shall inspect on a weekly basis all landscaped areas (turf, trees, <br />shrubs, ground cover, and annual color) for presence of disease, insect or rodent <br />infestation. If any disease, insect or rodent infestation is discovered, and upon <br />notification to the Director, Contractor shall take appropriate control measures to <br />resolve the problem. <br />(2) If any plant material (turf, groundcover, shrubs, trees etc.) dies without the <br />Contractor's Horticulturist and/or Arborist, as appropriate, diagnosing the plant and <br />implementing efforts to save the plant, the City will assume the Contractor caused <br />the plant's death. Contractor will be required to replace the plant with like species <br />and size at no extra cost to the City. <br />Irrigation System Maintenance <br />a) General Responsibilities <br />(1) Contractor shall use automatic or mechanical irrigation systems to water the areas <br />specified in this Agreement. In the event the existing irrigation system fails to <br />provide full and proper coverage, Contractor shall provide alternate irrigation with <br />full and proper coverage to all areas in the work site at no extra cost to the City. <br />(2) Newly planted trees, shrubs, ground cover and turf shall receive adequate water to <br />promote normal healthy growth. Proper berms or basins shall be maintained <br />during the establishment period. <br />b) Operation of Automatic Irrigation Controllers <br />Where the operation of automatic irrigation controllers is required, the Contractor shall: <br />(1) Not duplicate any coded City key furnished by the Parks, Recreation & <br />Community Services Agency to Contractor for access and operation of the <br />controller. <br />(2) Surrender all keys furnished to the Contractor by the Parks, Recreation & <br />Community Services Agency at the end of the contract period, or at any time <br />deemed necessary by the Director to prevent loss to the City of Santa Ana. <br />(3) Protect the security of City property by keeping controller cabinets and building <br />doors locked at all times. <br />
