REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />OCTOBER 16, 2006 <br />TITLE: <br />RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING <br />PARTICIPATION IN THE STATE <br />DEPARTNENT OF CORRECTIONS AND <br />REHABILITATION, CORRECTIONS <br />STANDARDS AUTHORITY'S TITLE II <br />PROGRAN GRANT <br />CI Y MANAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />APPROVED <br />^ As Recommended <br />^ As Amended <br />^ Ordinance on 151 Reading <br />^ Ordinance on 2ntl Reading <br />^ Implementing Resolution <br />^ Set Public Hearing For <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Adopt a resolution authorizing the submittal of a grant application to <br />the State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Corrections <br />Standards Authority to provide gang prevention and intervention at the <br />Delhi Center in an amount not to exceed $500,000. <br />DISCUSSION <br />The State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Title II Formula <br />Grants program supports State and local delinquency prevention and <br />intervention efforts, and juvenile justice system improvements. As the <br />administering agency for this federally funded program, the Corrections <br />Standards Authority will award up to seven million dollars in one-year <br />grants, with the possibility of two additional years of funding, to <br />qualified applicants. <br />Upon approval of the resolution, the Parks, Recreation and Community <br />Service Agency will submit a grant application to be considered for first <br />year funding, in an amount not to exceed $500,000. This resolution, which <br />is required as part of the application process, will authorize the City <br />Manager to execute the necessary agreement and any required extensions or <br />amendments. <br />The proposal for the Delhi Center will include an enrichment component <br />that will offer a wide variety of after school and summer activities, <br />including sports and exercise, cultural arts education, leadership <br />development activities, chess clubs, excursions and special events, and <br />other recreational services. The project will also include parent <br />training workshops that teach parents to help their children develop <br />positive habits at school and at home. <br />55B-1 <br />
