COMMENTS Councilmember Bist • Commented that because there are no bus turn outs in the right hand lanes near Main and MacArthur, traffic is severely backed up near the 55 Freeway on ramp. She asked staff to work with OCTA to see if this traffic problem can be resolved • Announced that she attended the grand opening of the new House 2 Home store and that it was a very impressive store • Noted that she has received many compliments from residents relative to the new green bus benches in the City of Santa Ana • Commented that there were two recent newspaper articles complimenting progress in the City including one about downtown and a second article listing Santa Ana as the 24`h safest City in the United States Councilmember Solorio • Noted that there is a need for diverse representation on the City's Boards and Commissions and asked residents interested in serving on a Board or Commission to notify the City Council • Commented that the County Board of Supervisors approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Newport Beach to do an environmental study to keep the curfew at John Wayne Airport in place, and that the City Council is monitoring this process • Attended the grand opening of FAMSA, a new furniture retail outlet store in the Downtown Plaza, which is an example of a large business from Mexico opening in the City • Reported that Santa Ana Unified School District and the Rancho Santiago Community College District continue to work with the City of Tustin on trying to acquire land for school facilities. He noted that the City Council has passed a resolution supporting these efforts Councilmember Franklin • Complimented the new joint committee of the City and the Santa Ana Unified School District on efforts to work together on issues of school development in Santa Ana • Announced that a group of firefighters from the City installed a plaque on the clock tower at the Spurgeon Building • Asked staff to meet with state representatives for support in obtaining a state grant for Santiago Park • Noted that in some instances the old bus benches are not being removed as the new benches are installed; he asked staff to look into this situation • Announced that the California Division of Tourism has designated Main Place as an exclusive California Welcome Center CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 223 JUNE 4, 2001
