CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br />Councilmember Alvarez: <br />• Wished everyone a happy new year <br />• Asked Police Chief Paul Walters to give an update on the Police and <br />Fire Games to be hosted this summer by Santa Ana. <br />• Asked the City Manager to provide an update on the proposed location <br />of the Court of Appeals in the Civic Center <br />• Noted that January 9, 2002 was the last day of the current Bowers <br />Museum exhibit on the Holy Land and encouraged residents to take <br />advantage of the opportunity to see this event <br />• Reminded residents that the Council meeting on January 22, 2002 <br />would be held at the Delhi Center <br />• Asked the City Council to adjourn in the memory of Sister Cecilia <br />Varela from St. Francis Home <br />• Thanked the Triangle Kids After School Program participants for the <br />flag artwork displayed in the Council chambers <br />Councilmember Christy: <br />• Asked Rip Ribble, Executive Director, Parks, Recreation and <br />Community Services Agency to give an update on the upcoming Youth <br />Expo on March 17, 2002 <br />• Asked John Reekstin, Executive Director, Community Development <br />Agency to brief the Council on the recent tour of the empowerment <br />zone by representatives of the HUD Washington office and Los <br />Angeles Office. Mr. Reekstin noted that the representatives were <br />impressed with the progress accomplished in the zone <br />• Noted that there was a recent article in the Orange County Register <br />that was critical of the slow pace of the Friendship Park Renovation <br />project. She noted that the project site is located on top of a flood <br />control channel and plans needed to be coordinated with the County; <br />she further noted that the project is now on track, and is expected to be <br />completed by mid -May 2002 <br />• Reported that she and Councilmember Alvarez went to Ontario, <br />California on January 5, 2002 to hear President Bush speak at a town <br />hall meeting <br />• Announced that John Perez, a student from Saddleback High had <br />drawn a sketch depicting what September 11, 2001 meant to him, and <br />that this sketch in on display in Sacramento and may be chosen to <br />present to President Bush <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 17 JANUARY 7, 2002 <br />
