Public Facilities Naming No. 2008-06 <br />July 14, 2008 <br />Page 2 <br />Raul Ayala, Jr. passed away in March of 2006 and the Kiwanis Club <br />desires to honor him by naming the new basketball court the Raul Ayala, <br />Jr. Sports Court. <br />Sections 33-5 and 33-6 of the Municipal Code govern the naming of <br />streets and public facilities, including parks and park playgrounds. <br />The code includes guidelines for the naming of these facilities and <br />identifies policy guidelines (Exhibit 5) In general, the naming of <br />parks and public facilities should consider: <br />1. A name which serves to identify the location of the subject area. <br />2. A name which references the history of the site or area. <br />3. A name which identifies a person or family which made extraordinary <br />donation of land or funds to promote the improvement of the public <br />facility. <br />4. A name which recognizes a person or <br />contribution to the well being of the <br />commissioners, officers and employees <br />who currently holds such position. <br />Analysis of the Issues <br />family who made a significant <br />city, including city council, <br />of the city, but not anyone <br />Based on the guidelines established in the Municipal Code and in <br />consideration of what would best identify the naming of facilities, the <br />following analysis was considered for the suggested name. <br />1. Existing Name: <br />• Currently no name has been approved for the new Kiwanis Barrier <br />Free Park sports court at Thornton Park. <br />2. Proposed Name: <br />~~ <br />• Raul Ayala, Jr. Sports Court" recognizes a community resident <br />who has made a significant contribution towards the establishment <br />of the Kiwanis Barrier Free Park in Thornton Park, especially the <br />sports (basketball) court. <br />• Raul Ayala, Jr. was the inspiration for the Kiwanis Club members <br />to provide numerous volunteer hours for creating the Kiwanis <br />Barrier Free Park in Thornton Park. He became the model image <br />through marketing materials for development of this special needs <br />park. <br />39A-3 <br />
