Zuniga, Diana
From: Khloe Rios-Wyatt <krios-wyatt@alianzatranslatinx.org>
Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 1:17 PM
To: eComment
Subject: Accountability Can't Wait: Let's Fulfill the Promise of Police Oversight
Follow Up Flag: Follow up
Flag Status: Flagged
Attention: This email originated from outside of City of Santa Ana.Use caution when opening attachments or links.
Santa Ana City Council,
Dear Santa Ana City Council and City Manager Alvaro Nunez,
We built the Police Oversight Commission to be a beacon of justice and accountability—a
commitment to our community that no one is above the law. Yet, without an Independent
Director, the commission is stuck on the sidelines, unable to do the work it was designed to
do.
This isn't about assigning blame; it's about taking action. I know we all share the goal of
making Santa Ana a safer, more just place for everyone. That's why it's crucial to move
forward —to appoint a Director who can initiate investigations, issue subpoenas, and ensure
transparency.
We've seen the real consequences of delay. Since the commission's inception, lives have
been lost in officer-involved shootings, and families are left searching for answers. The one-
year deadline for launching investigations is fast approaching, and every day without
leadership makes accountability harder to achieve.
The community has shown incredible patience and resilience. Now it's time for us to meet
their commitment with action. Appointing an Independent Director will honor the promise we
made when the commission was created —to put justice first. Preserving funding for this role
in the upcoming budget will ensure it can fulfill its purpose.
We have an opportunity to show our community that we don't just make promises—we keep
them. Let's take this step together and restore faith in the system we worked so hard to build.
1
