Purpose and Overview <br /> The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act(WIOA)places a priority on providing youth <br /> with occupational learning opportunities through work experience. Work experience allows <br /> youth participants to develop essential workplace skills while combining academic and <br /> occupational education to enhance career readiness. <br /> Z. Work Experience Criteria <br /> To qualify as a WIOA-authorized work experience, the following criteria must be met: <br /> • Work experience can be either paid or unpaid. <br /> • It must include both academic and occupational education (delivered concurrently or <br /> sequentially). <br /> • It may include the following types of work experience: <br /> • Summer employment opportunities and other employment opportunities available <br /> throughout the school year. <br /> • Pre-apprenticeship programs that prepare individuals to enter and succeed in registered <br /> apprenticeships. <br /> • Internships and job shadowing to expose participants to occupational areas of interest. <br /> • On-the-job training(OJT)that provides hands-on skills and knowledge necessary for job <br /> performance. <br /> 3.
