Wide shiplap siding covers the exterior of the top two floors, <br />while stucco covers the first floor. The main entrance is through a gazebo, <br />centered in the front of the patio in the center of the U. Designed to <br />complement the Wehrly House on its north side, the building exhibits a <br />faintly Italianate influence. Two story square bay windows are centered <br />in the front facades of each front unit. Balconies run along the south and <br />north sides. This building does not contribute to the district because of it.s <br />age. <br />819 N. Spurgeon St. Dr, Wehrly House Colonial Revival 1905/1919 <br />When the Dr. Wehrly House was built in 1905, it wa.s a typical single- <br />storied Colonial Revival bungalow. In 1919 the Wehrlys added a second <br />story and changed the front facade, giving the house an Italianate <br />influence. Clad in narrow clapboard siding, it is crov/ned with a flat roof <br />edged with a wide cornice. A large open porch, reached by two french <br />doors, is located on the north half of the second floor, front facade. Paiis <br />of .multi-paned casement windows are used tlircughout the front facade, <br />with the exception of the large multi-paned stationary window in the <br />center of the slanted bay window in the north half of the first story. It is <br />bordered by a ca. 1950 wrought iron railing. The front portico, featuring a <br />segmented arch, is supported by pairs of round wooden columns. A <br />slanted bay window, original to the 1905 construction, is centered in the <br />north facade. A large stained glass window, depicting a European scene^ <br />was installed in the south facade in 1919. <br />Dr. John Wehrly, a physician who was one of Santa Ana and Orange <br />County’s finest doctors, and his w-ife, Augusta, built the house at 819 in <br />1905. He specialized in diseases of the stomach and electro-theraputics. <br />Coming to California and Santa Ana in 1901, he opened his first office in <br />the Finley Block in Downtown Santa Ana. In 1912 he moved into his own <br />building at 607 N. Main St. Serving as County Physician from 1911 to <br />1915, he was one of the founders of the Orange County Hospital and Poor <br />Farm.
