The wood shingle cladding <br />is neatly placed in alternating rows of long and short shingles. Ribbons of <br />eight-light casement windows let lots of light into the house. The recessed <br />corner porch is supported by two brick-clad square pilasters. The porch is <br />entered on the west side, and a brick-clad railing with concrete cap runs <br />along the north side. The paneled front door is in the east wall of the <br />porch, while a pair of french doors are located in the south wall. <br />Ida Mitchell, an aitist, built this house in 1914 and lived here for <br />almost thirty years. In 1941 the Simcox family, Archie, Rose, Jane, and Rose x <br />Marie bought the house. Jane was a local telephone operator. <br />403-409 Vance St. Breaux Apts. Minimal Traditional 1948 <br />Rectangular in shape and topped with a low-pitched hipped roof, <br />the stucco-clad apartment house at 401-409 Vance Street is part of a two- <br />building complex built in 1948 by James and Laurence Breaux. The other <br />building faces Minter St. Two-over-two double-hung windows, divided <br />horizontally, flank the centered front entrance. The single-storied hipped <br />entrance portico is supported by square posts. Above the portico is a small <br />diamond-paned casement window. A row of four matching garages with <br />plain wood doors is located to the east of the building. <br />James and Laurence Breaux, who built this apartment building and <br />the one to the west on N. Minter, lived in the other building, in apartment <br />909. James was a salesman for the W. R. Stotts Company. <br />410 Vance St. Wright Transfer Co.Brick Commercial 1919 <br />Constructed of red brick, the Wright Transfer Co. building was built <br />in 1919, the same year as he and Emma built the Craftsman apartment <br />house immediately to the west.
