FRENCH ST. (there is only one house between Civic Center Drive <br />East and Eighth Street). <br />720 N. French St. Cochems House Neo-classical Revival 1906 <br />Clad in narrow clapboard siding, the Neo-classical Cochems House is <br />topped by a bellcast hipped roof with matching gables in the front and on <br />the north side. The enclosed eaves are decorated with carved brackets. <br />A cantilevered slanted bay window is located on the south end of the front <br />facade, while a recessed porch occupies the northern two-thirds. Ionic <br />capitals top the round columns. The north side of the wrap -around porch <br />has been enclosed with a ribbon of windows. Plate glass and double -hung <br />windows are used throughout the house. The plate glass window beside the <br />front door is topped with a diamond -paned transom and flanked by double - <br />hung sidelights. A slated bay window is located on the north (Eighth St.) <br />facade. An attractive two -and -a -half foot tall foundation of manufactured <br />stone supports the house. The north side of the porch was enclosed in the <br />1940's. The new front door, front steps, and piers appear to be the only new <br />alterations. This house has experienced an impressive transformation over <br />the past ten years. In the early 1980's it was covered with poorly -applied <br />stucco and was boarded up. It has been returned to. its original beauty and <br />is now very well maintained. The two -car garage appears to be original, but <br />has a new door. <br />William Cochems,, the owner of the Vienna Bakery, built this house in <br />1906. A popular man in town, he was nicknamed "Billy the Baker". He and <br />his family lived in the house for more than forty years. <br />800 BLOCK N. FRENCH ST. <br />801 N. French St. Smith-Campau House Craftsman Bungalow with Tudor <br />and Egyptian influences. 1909 <br />One of the finest English Tudor houses in Orange County, the Senator <br />Smith House is one -and -a -half stories high and topped with a multi -level <br />roof with rolled edges. A wide shed -style dormer occupies most of the <br />second story of the front facade. The dormer is clad in wood shingles and <br />features several windows across its face. Single exposed beams accent the <br />
