<br />City of Santa Ana | First Street Multimodal Corridor <br />Technical Memorandum <br /> <br />62 <br /> <br /> <br />Bus Lane & Bikeway Concept: <br />Four travel lanes and two bus <br />lanes awith a separate dedicated bikeway <br />and a sidewalk on each side of First Street <br /> <br />Bicyclist Improvements <br /> <br />• Requests for continuous bike <br />paths through intersections, <br />protected bike lanes with physical <br />barriers like curbs and planters, and clear signage in English and Spanish. <br />• Support for bi-directional bikeways and lanes on both sides of the street. <br />• Concerns for bicyclists traveling around buses, lack of separation/barriers, and single <br />bike lane provided. <br /> Pedestrian Improvements <br /> <br />• Requests for additional crosswalks near schools, z -crossings <br />to address jaywalking, and curb extensions to shorten crossings and improve <br />visibility. <br />• Requests for improved push button placement and countdown signals, <br />longer crossing times for wheelchair users, and improved curb ramp alignment <br />for accessibility. <br />• Concerns for drainage and potential flooding at corners. <br /> <br />Safety Improvements <br /> <br />• Support for separation among all modes of transportation, reduction in intersection <br />width, protected curbs at intersections, traffic signals and crossings spaced <br />throughout corridor. <br />• Requests for left and right turn signals and enforcement tools such traffic signal <br />cameras for pedestrian safety. <br />• Concerns for pedestrians and bicyclists about travel conflicts in shared areas as well <br />as visibility issues without curb extensions. <br />• Improved vendor and pedestrian safety due to exclusive bus lane. <br /> <br />Roadway/Driver Improvements <br /> <br />• Support for dedicated bus lanes due to improved bus reliability, better wait times, <br />incentivized public transit, and mitigation of traffic impacts on buses . <br />• Mixed opinions on bus lane impacts to traffic. Some note it will improve flow while <br />others feel it will worsen congestion. <br />• Suggestion to add dedicated bus signals at busy intersections . <br />• Interest in learning if bus lanes will have dedicated hours (full-day or peak) and if two <br />car lanes in each direction are necessary.
