Thomas ESPINOZA was on the passenger side of the <br />ve hicle. <br />At approximately 1725 hours, Detectives advised over the police radio of an officer involved shooting at <br />the Chevron Gas Station located at 2650 North Grand Avenue. They requested paramedics to respond <br />for a male suspect vvith a gunshot wound to the ankle. The male passenger, later identified as Thomas <br />ESPINOZA was d e tained pending further investigation. <br />Sergeant Ri v as advised us of the public safety statement pro v ided by Detective Corporal M. Lenm1on <br />#3 174. Corporal Lemmon advised that he had fired one gunshot at Thomas ESPINOZA. He added that <br />Detective N. Lopez #3296 fired one gunshot from an AR-15 at Thomas ESPINOZA. Thomas <br />ESPINOZA was taken into custody w ithout further incident. Detective D. Fernandez #3303 had fired <br />one gunshot at Timothy ESPINOZA. Sergeant Rivas added that Detective Lopez placed the AR-15 rifle, <br />he discharged, on the front passenge r seat of Santa Ana Police Department patrol vehicle #92 1. <br />Timothy ESPINOZA sustained a g unshot wound to his right foot and transported to Orange County <br />Global Medical Center for treatment. Thomas ESPINOZA vvas transp011 e d to the Santa Ana Po lice <br />Departme nt for further investigation. <br />Sergeant Rivas concluded the briefing and I was paired with Orange County District Attorney <br />Investigator M. Kendrick. <br />At the conclusion of the briefing, I walked the scene located within the Chevron Gas Station property at <br />2650 North Grand A ve nue. M e mbers of the Orange County Crime Lab began to document, photograph <br />and collect evid e nce. <br />The officer involv ed shooting occtm-ed along the west and east portion of th e Chevron Gas convenience <br />store. The convenience store is located on the south end of the property . Along the west side of the <br />convenience store, I observed three marked police vehicles, from west to east, identified a s 641, 92 1, <br />and 927. The vehicles emer gency lights were on. Parked in front of police ve hicle #921 was a black <br />prime r Ford Explorer w ith California li cense There was a .223 caliber cm1ridge case, bullet <br />and jacket fragments, a .40 cali ber cartridge case, several credit cards, hotel key cards, a knife, <br />methamphetamine pipe. keys and a California identification card w ith # belonging to <br /> on the west s ide of the convenience store. <br />On the east side of the convenience store , I observed an address book, a wall et containing Timothy <br />ESPINOZA'S Cali fornia Ide ntification Card, a blue bandana, a b lack li ghter, a b lack ny lon fir st aid kit, <br />a pair of black sneakers, one white sock, one white sock with apparent blood, one .45 caliber ca11ridge <br />case, a striped orange/blue shirt and a gray/yellow pouch. The pouch contained a hy podermic syringe, <br />which contained approximate ly 30 units of a dark liquid substance. <br />Parked next to fuel pump #7 was a Santa Ana Police D epartme nt unmarke d police v ehicle , d escribed as <br />a si lver 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan with Cali forn ia license The van was facing south and <br />had a black s hi rt draped over the left s id e view minor. <br />2053 hours <br />SAPD Forensic Specialist M . Briano #3 173, Investigator M. Kendrick, C hevron Gas Incide nt Manager <br /> and [ wal ked to the con venie nce store office. downloaded surveillance footage <br />of this inc ident.
