Boys primary activities as assault with a deadly weapon, homicide, and robbery. Based on my training and
experience, I know Alley Boys is a traditional Hispanic “turf” gang. I know “turf” is slang for the claimed territory of the
criminal street gang.
Based on my training and experience, I know the claimed territory of Alley Boys is Edinger Avenue to the north,
Segerstrom Avenue to the south, Bristol Street to the west, and Flower Street to the east. The claimed area of Alley
Boys is riddled with gang-type graffiti with acronyms such as “ABRX3 (Alley Boys Rifa x3), AB, and ALLEY BOYS.”
The area in which today’s robbery occurred is near the claimed gang territory of Alley Boys.
Based on my training and experience, I know Alley Boys wear common signs and symbols such as Atlanta Braves “A”
hats, and Angel’s Baseball clothing with the letter “A”, and commonly wear the color black to distinguish themselves
from other criminal street gangs.
Suspect Contact:
As other officers were conducting announcements on Birch Street for occupants of 1718 South Birch Street to exit the
residence, air support identified as “Angel” broadcasted that he saw a male wearing a black and white shirt exit the
residence then returned inside. It should be noted the subject Angel observed matched the description of the armed
robbery suspect.
Angel broadcast that he saw a subject running westbound and hopping a wall to the backyard of 1719 South Ross
Street, directly toward where I was positioned. Additionally, Angel said he saw another subject exit the residence but
could not get an updated visual due to an outdoor patio covering. As I was facing eastbound, I saw the suspect, later
identified as begin to exit the backyard of 1719 South Ross Street, where Angel broadcasted that he saw
the subject jump. Additionally, matched the description of the suspect given by the victim.
It should be noted I had my patrol unit’s side-mounted spotlights illuminated toward the backyard of 1719 South Ross
Street, a helicopter was overhead, other patrol officers were on the perimeter side to the east, and those officers had
already given announcements. It is reasonable to believe knew of police presence coupled with the observation
of him running in an attempt to avoid police contact.
I drew my duty firearm and pointed it toward as he exited the backyard of 1719 South Ross Street in an attempt
to de-escalate the situation, but also be prepared if he was still armed with the firearm used in the robbery. I gave
clear and concise commands to put his hands up, which refused and kept his left hand inside his jeans pocket.
Additionally, I heard Officer Monaco give multiple verbal commands to put his hands up, to which also
refused to comply and only raised his right hand, leaving his left hand inside his jeans pocket.
I observed as walked westbound toward Officer Monaco and me, ignoring all verbal commands. I saw stop
and began to immediately step backward in an obvious attempt to flee again. I saw as he ran back eastbound
into the backyard of 1719 South Ross Street in what I believed to be an attempt to avoid police contact and/or escape.
I chased on foot into the backyard of 1718 South Ross Street.
As I entered the backyard, I saw as he was facing me. I saw left hand was still in his pocket even after the
previous verbal commands to show his hands, and additional commands were again given in the backyard to show
his hands. It was blatantly obvious was refusing to comply with these simple and concise commands to show his
hands.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, I gave a clear command with my duty firearm pointed at him, to show
“your fucking hands or I’ll shoot you!” My verbal command was driven by the following objective observations and
factors:
· A firearm was used in the commission of a robbery
· matched the description of the suspect given by the victim
· had already attempted to flee multiple times from the scene
· had not been searched and was refusing to take his left hand out of his pocket, even with a firearm pointed
directly at him and commands given
· The victim identified as a member of the criminal street gang Alley Boys
· There was a second suspect seen exiting the residence with whose whereabouts were unknown, while
attempting to contact
Santa Ana PD 2025-11359 Report by Nevarez, Robert 3673 2 of 3
