REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />AUGUST 24, 2011 <br />TITLE: <br />RESOLUTION FOR SAFE ROUTES <br />TO SCHOOL GRANT APPLICATIONS <br />( L �, LIL, <br />CITY MANAGER <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />/- 1,,:Z61yJ :I <br />❑ As Recommended <br />❑ As Amended <br />• Ordinance on 1st Reading <br />• Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />❑ Implementing Resolution <br />❑ Set Public Hearing For_ <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />Adopt a resolution supporting state funding of five projects in the City and authorizing the <br />Executive Director of the Public Works Agency to submit projects for funding consideration under <br />California's Safe Routes to School Program. <br />DISCUSSION <br />The State of California Department of Transportation has issued a call for projects for the Safe <br />Routes to School Program (SRTS). This is a federally funded program that provides construction <br />funds for projects to improve school pedestrian safety such as traffic signals, school signage, driver <br />feedback signs, new sidewalks, and pedestrian /bicycling safety educational campaigns. <br />Staff is requesting authorization to submit five projects for SRTS funding for fiscal year 2011/2012 <br />(Exhibit 1). Given the need for these improvements, staff recommends that the City Council adopt <br />a resolution supporting State funding of these projects and authorizing the Executive Director of <br />the Public Works Agency to submit the designated projects for funding consideration under the <br />Safe Routes to School Program. <br />ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT <br />Environmental reviews will be conducted for those projects that receive funding and will be <br />presented to the City Council when the construction contract(s) is awarded. These types of <br />projects typically qualify for Categorical Exemptions. <br />55D -1 <br />
