Rearrest for other types of crime

<br />Of the 9,691 male sex offenders
<br />released from prison in 1994 -
<br />- 43% (4,163 men) were rearrested
<br />for a crime of any kind (table 41 )
<br />- 5.3% (517 men) were rearrested
<br />for a sex offense
<br />- 17.1% (1,658 men) were rearrested
<br />for a violent crime
<br />- 13.3% (1,285 men) were rearrested
<br />for a property crime of some kind.
<br />Of the 9,691 released men, 168 (1 .7%)
<br />were rearrested for rape and 396
<br />(4.1 %) were rearrested for sexual
<br />assault. The 168 rearrested for rape
<br />plus the 396 rearrested for sexual
<br />assault totals 564, which is 47 greater
<br />than the total 517 who were rearrested
<br />for a sex crime. The reason is that 47
<br />men were rearrested for both rape and
<br />sexual assault.
<br />The category of violent crime for which
<br />a prisoner was most likely to be
<br />rearrested was assault (8.8%, or 848 of
<br />the 9,691); the category least likely was
<br />homicide (0.5%, or 45 of the 9,691
<br />men).
<br />Just over 1 in 5 sex offenders (2,045
<br />out of 9,691) were rearrested for a
<br />public-order offense, such as a parole
<br />violation or traffic offense.
<br />Rapists and sexua/ assau/ters
<br />Among the 3,115 released rapists
<br />- 46% (1 ,432) were rearrested
<br />for a crime of any kind
<br />- 18.7% (582) were rearrested
<br />for a violent crime
<br />- 0.7% (22) were rearrested for
<br />homicide
<br />• 14.7% (459) were rearrested
<br />for a property offense.
<br />A relatively small percentage of rapists
<br />(2.5%, or 78 of the 3,1 15) were
<br />charged with repeating the crime for
<br />which they were imprisoned.
<br />Among the 6,576 released sexual
<br />assaulters -
<br />- 41 .5% (2,731) were rearrested
<br />for a crime of any kind
<br />- 16.4% (1,076) were rearrested
<br />for a violent crime
<br />- 0.3% (23) were rearrested
<br />for killing someone
<br />- 12.6% (826) were rearrested
<br />for a property offense.
<br />Nearly 1 in 20 released sexual
<br />assaulters (4.7%, or 308 of the 6,576)
<br />were charged with committing the
<br />same type of crime for which had just
<br />served time in prison.
