Services include solid waste <br /> recycling, materials recovery, collection, processing, transfer, disposal, <br /> street sweeping and other solid waste specialty services. WMNA provides <br /> solid waste collection services to more than 1,700 municipalities in North <br /> America and provides its services to more than 12 million residential and <br /> commercial customers. The Company operates 133 solid waste landfills in <br /> the U.S. and Canada and has 50 others in development. Twenty-six landfill <br /> gas recovery and gas-to-electric systems produce energy equivalent to 1.6 <br /> million barrels of oil each year. WMNA also operates a network of solid <br /> waste handling facilities including more than 80 transfer stations and more <br /> than 80 materials recovery facilities in North America. <br /> Waste Management of North America's Recycle America®and Recycle <br /> Canada® recycling services offer curbside recycling to more than 5 million <br /> homes in 600 communities. In 1991 the program collected and processed <br /> more than 1.8 million tons of recyclables. <br /> The Company has two joint ventures designed to help facilitate end <br /> markets for recyclables. Paper Recycling International (PRI), a joint venture <br /> with Stone Container Corporation, is the world's largest company to market <br /> recycled paper. PRI collects, buys and sells all grades of recyclable fiber <br /> including corrugated,newspapers and mixed wastepaper. The second joint <br /> venture, the Container Recycling Alliance (CRA), was formed in cooperation <br /> with American National Can and helps recycle all types of metal and glass <br /> containers. Much of the material processed and marketed through these <br /> joint ventures is collected through Recycle America® and Recycle Canada® <br /> residential and commercial recycling efforts. <br /> Waste Management of North America's WMI Services division provides <br /> local governments, special events planners, property management and <br /> commercial and industrial customers with a wide range of related services <br /> including: portable sanitation, portable structures, locked storage <br /> containers, temporary fencing, power poles, refuse chutes and contract <br /> 7 <br />
