1P ANA.
a
o
r t
Santa Ana Building Healthy Communities
1505 E 17`h St, Suite 111, Santa Ana, CA 92705
PHONE: (714)617-88911 FAX: (714)647-0901 1 www.sa-bhc.org
April 30, 2017
City of Santa Ana
Investing in the Artist Grant Administration
To Whom It May Concern:
I steadfastly write this letter recommending Priscila Hernandez for the City of Santa Ana's Invest
in the Artist Grant. Ms. Hernandez has been an integral part of the arts and culture landscape of our
City for the last 10 years. She has hosted successful annual events such as The Art and Culture Festival
and the Women's Day Festival that convene the entire community to lift up and celebrate the
contributions of countless women from Santa Ana and the surrounding cities. Her life's work and
commitment to the arts and to Santa Ana make her an excellent candidate for this award.
I came to know Ms. Hernandez through her participation in a beloved arts and cultural
community center-- EI Centro Cultural de Mexico. There, Priscila not only developed her artwork, but
also undertook leadership responsibilities to run the organization. She ran the Community Partners
program, welcoming other local artists to the Centro, hosting open mic nights, and providing workshops.
Over the last seven years, Ms. Hernandez has organized both the Art and Culture Festival and the
Women's Day Festival that allowed for artists, vendors, musicians, and even actors and actresses. These
events continue to be multi -generational and educational, and offer the space for more and more
community art and artists.
Having participated in the steering committee for the Arts and Cultural Master Plan, I know to
be true that a very important intention of the Master Plan was to support local artists. The City has an
incredible opportunity to support those artists that have been here, that with little to no funding have
not only advanced their art but have created and opened spaces for other community artists. Artists are
the thread of our social fabric; they weave people together through creative expressions of our realities.
It is important that the artists reflect the communities of Santa Ana. It will be by supporting artists like
Ms. Hernandez that we will truly enrich and invigorate our arts and culture landscape. Should you have
any questions, do not hesitate to reach me at (714)335-1528, or ana.urzua(@sa-bhc.org.
Sincerely,
Ana Siria Urzua
Sustainability Director
Santa Ana Building Healthy Communities
