The following document describes the services I provide and my credentials, My goal is to help caregivers of all species of animals learn how to successfully apply science based training technology. I focus on force free methodology with an emphasis on positive reinforcement training techniques to ensure high standards in animal welfare. I teach a combination of learning theory from the science of behavior analysis. However my primary objective is to facilitate practical application. My goal is for animal caregivers to apply what they learn and fine tune their technique to ultimately provide the best care possible for the animals they steward, _. Objectives: In general most facilities have two objectives. Developing staff members' skills and knowledge and achieving specific behaviorgoals for the animals in the collection. Animal Training Goals; Animal training goals typically fall under the following headings. *Training to cooperate in medical care and routine preventative health care procedures *Training to facilitate husbandry procedures and make day to day animal care easy and stress free *Training to address and prevent behavior problems *Training for educational presentations, interpretive exhibits, keeper talks and guest interaction *Training for conservation, breeding and/or research I will work with you to help identify and prioritize behavioral objectives within your collection, I also provide materials to help staff members organize, track and facilitate training progress. Staff Development: Staff development is also a primary focus as this is critical to achieving animal training goals. For an initial on site visit I recommend a combination of classroom learning and one on one coaching during training sessions. Barbara's Force Free Animal Training 6904 Cherrydale Dr Austin, TX 76745 United States Email: Barb@ BarbarasFFAT.com Phone: +1512-423-7734 www.BarbirasFFAT.com Practical Application and Understanding Learning Theory Lectures: These lectures include a PowerPoint presentation with inspiring videos examples of animal training from around the world. If the team has covered basic introductory material in the past, we can focus on specific needs of the Zoo. I have numerous presentations on specific topics prepared. These lectures can cover: *Problem solving *Motivation *Fine tuning practical application skills *Adressing aggressive behavior *Addressing fear Responses *Training medical behaviors *Training husbandry behaviors *Operant conditioning (understanding the difference between positive and negative reinforcement, positive and negative punishment) *Which principles are advocated and why, and which to avoid *Pairing procedures and when to use them *Cues and how to insert them *The appropriate use of the bridging stimulus *How to get behavior started *Targets and their use *Luring *Free shaping *Antecedent arrangement *Shaping with approximations *Capturing behavior *How to use these tools appropriately to get desired behavior Due to animal care needs it is often helpful to break these lectures into short sessions over the course of the visit. For example one hour of lecture per day is often easily accommodated by most facilities. This can be open to all staff members interested in learning about training or refreshing their current knowledge. Classroom time can also be devoted to watching/discussing videos of training accomplished during the visit. One on one coaching sessions allows for a better understanding of the specific needs of each individual staff member (or team) in terms of practical application skills development and learning theory comprehension. Direct observation, opportunities to give instruction, and having staff members implement information with immediate feedback offers the quickest path to Improvement. Training sessions are recorded for future reference and continued learning opportunities. The following sample schedules can be used as reference for your planning.
