Box 1988, M31 Santa Ana, CA 92701 ecomment@santa-ana.org citycouncil@santa-ana ora RE: Agenda item: HISTORIC RESOURCES POLICIES AND REGULATIONS Dear Mayor and Councilmembers; We encourage your support for the proposed changes to your SAMC to strengthen protections for your historic buildings and neighborhoods. These improvements will help to maintain and enhance neighborhoods and quality of life in Orange County's capital city. Santa Ana can set the standard for the rest of the county; you have the largest and best collection of beautiful historic buildings and a rich cultural history as well. Adopting the ordinance to require Historic Resources Commission (HRC) review of building permits on buildings over 50 years of age (as the City of Whittier does) is a worthwhile layer of protection. Adjusting your fees for Historical Register listing and Mills Act is the right thing to do to make your program more inclusive. Santa Ana's fees in this regard have been among the highest in the entire United States. Placing an HRC member on the Planning Commission is another way to ensure that adequate protections and review are made on projects in a timely manner. The recent dust up over the Toll Brothers/First American project at 5rh and Main could have been a Preserve Orange County 206 W. Thank you for your consideration of this issue. Sincerely, Alan Hess Board Chair Preserve Orange County Preserve Orange County 206 W.
