What is the name of the neighborhood where you reside?
Heninger Park
How do you describe your community to someone who hasn’t visited? What streets/boundaries define
your community?
Martin R. Heninger founded, developed & by 1922 had built out "Heninger Park". Heninger Park is Santa Ana's
"Bungalow Neighborhood", the largest collection of Craftsman & California bungalow style houses in the City.
As an organized neighborhood association, Heninger Park has been active since the early 1980's. Heninger Park
Historic District, a special historic overlay zone, was adopted by City Council in 1986. Streets/Boundaries: First
Street on the north, West McFadden Avenue on the south, South Flower Street on the west & alley behind
South Sycamore on the East (South Main Street). (a rectangle shape with streets laid out in a grid)
What are the major cultural/recreational/educational/religious institutions in your community?
Major Cultural: Historic Overlay Zone Special District 40 (SD-40) & ordinance setting standards, (including
Architectural Design Guidelines & an Architectural Review Committee), for the restoration & revitalization of
the exterior features of all properties, Santa Ana's Bungalow Neighborhood, Fire Museum @ historic Fire
Station #75, Historic Register Properties including United Auto Building, Heninger House, Historic
Preservation Award properties - Recreational: Neal Machander Tennis Center - Educational: Santa Ana High
School, Martin Heninger Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School - Religious Institutions: Trinity
1
Cristo Rey Lutheran Church, El Getsemani United Methodist Church, El Getsemani United Methodist Church,
Iglesia Bautista Vida Eterna, Iglesia de Cristo Camino de Santidad, Santa Ana Spanish Seventh-day Adventist
Church, + several more churches - Markets: Northgate Market, Van Ness Market + several more markets
Does your community have major geographical boundaries/features (freeways, parks, lakes, mountains)?
Major real boundaries are streets, (First St., McFadden Ave., S. Flower, S. Main St.), because Heninger Park
was built up by 1922 in a planned street grid design as created by Martin R. Heninger. Heninger Park has NO
freeways, parks, lakes or mountains.
Do you have concerns about the current boundaries of your Ward?
No concerns about the current boundaries of my ward.
Other Comments:
Heninger Park was founded & developed from barley fields by a single individual, Martin R. Heninger, street
boundaries, planned street grid design & build-out with bungalow houses was well established by 1922,
Heninger Park has been an active Neighborhood Association since the early 1980's, Heninger Park in it's
entirely, from street boundary to street boundary, is a Historic Overlay Zone, Special District 40 (SD-40), & has
an ordinance setting standards for the restoration and revitalization of the exterior features of all properties & a
supporting cluster of historical, cultural, recreational, educational, religious institutions & grocery markets all
contribute to Heninger Park's stand alone characteristic. For these reasons as stated above it is my belief that
Heninger Park should remain intact in any & all district maps - in order to best elect a single (1) representative
to represent Heninger Park as a whole.
