Subject:The housing shortage is hurting our wallets
Housing prices have skyrocketed across the country, with prices up 37.5%
following the pandemic. Our neighborhoods are riddled with exclusionary
zoning: bans on duplexes, apartments, student housing, and other dense
affordable housing options. This is making housing unaffordable for renters and
homeowners alike.
YIMBY Action firmly believes housing expenses should only be 25% or less
of household income. Instead, families are forced to live paycheck to paycheck
with little money for other essentials, let alone leisure.
Obstacles are even greater for seniors and people with disabilities, who struggle
to find affordable options that meet their accessibility needs. Currently, the Low-
Income Housing Tax Credit Program doesn’t include requirements for
accessibility within housing options. That’s why YIMBYs support the VITAL Act,
1
which would introduce these requirements and allocate additional funding to the
program. If passed, it will enable seniors and those with disabilities to live in
homes that are safe, affordable, and inclusive, while also increasing the
production of affordable housing overall.

Good afternoon Concilman Hernandez and anyone else to whom this may concern
I've been a resident of ward 5 since about 2016 and have lived in California since 2007. I moved here from a rural town almost
purely for the sake of transit access. I'm not sighted well enough to drive but can bike safely due to the fact that you're expected
to approach but not exceed road speeds.
1
I've just recently purchased an e-bike and started making my 15 mile commute while traffic cycling and using designated paths.
But I fear that there is a concerted campaign to regulate these vehicles out of existence. Not only does that make me fearful for
my own future but it also makes me sad for everyone else's. My e-bike has turned terrain that was, frankly, deeply hostile and
dangerous to me as a pedal-only cyclist into a space that I can make my own. Taking a lane as I'm legally required to do doesn't
make me fear for my life. Using left turn lanes and biking in dense traffic, likewise, feels more natural. I feel like part of the transit
community now rather than someone being forced to hold on for dear life.
I hope that this is a future other people will be permitted to experience. Please support fair classification of e-bikes and, most of
all, be realistic about licensing requirements. Most of these vehicles are not any more capable than a normal bike except in that
they permit you to ride long distances without risking dehydration or heat stroke. And I hope you'll continue to build out
dedicated, separated bike lanes. Those lanes have single handedly given me hope as someone living and working with a
disability in this county. I beg you to think of people like me who are trying our best to live a dignified life here.

Please encourage NO MORE salvage yards in Logan. Santa Ana needs Arts! And Culture. I have lived all my life in Santa Ana
and want to see businesses to be proud of. The homeless situation is out of control and another salvage business just brings a
bad element. Please encourage the Arts in Santa Ana.

I would be very opposed to seeing Logan Creative Development and/or The Blinking Owl Distillary sold to accommodate a
recycling facility or scrap yard operation. It would just invite more homeless folks and street criminals who are selling copper wire
that they have stolen into the area.
We already have a serious homeless population in this area due to the proximity to the railroad station. Please don't compound
the issue.

Please work to oppose the selling of the art property in Logan neighborhood, by Jackoffsky, to whoever would turn it into more
industrial or salvage type of business. I'm in the arts district and he messed stuff up down here already. Don't let him continue on
this same path. Thank you for your time and service to the community.

Subject: Historic Trees on the site of the Landmark Main Library site
ALL;
I am writing to you today to respectfully request that any effort to remove the historic trees on the site of the old main
Library be halted at once. Just today I was notified of this proposed action and curious as why in a city that prides itself
on being a 'Tree City' and a "Bird Sanctuary' this would be done without any public input. From what I am told the
ficus tree is perhaps the oldest in the world.......or at least north America. And the fig tree is home to hundreds of the
beloved wild parrots that haunt Santa Ana and are locally quite famous.
Let me know the status of this project. And please take a second look..........and step back. Thanks so much.

Subject: The Historic Ficus Tree
Good afternoon Honorable Mayor and City Council,
It has come to my attention that we are at risk of losing the largest Historic Ficus Tree to parking spaces at the
city library. This would be a tragic loss to our citizens as well as the nesting site for several species of
birds. Santa Ana is a bird sanctuary city and destroying their home for additional parking stalls would be
devastating. Please rethink this plan. Please do not sacrifice this tree for parking spaces. Our city is proud to be
designated as a tree city, and a walkable city; the last thing we need is to destroy history, and destroy the
sanctuary for birds for parking. This plan is ridiculous and needs your help to stop this potential tragedy.
Thank you for your consideration

Subject: Removal of Fig Ficus Tree on East Side or the Historic Main Library
Dear Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council;
Madam Mayor and Councilmembers;
After a lengthy discussion with Mr. Brian Sternberg this morning I now understand the FACTS of this
issue. And that is that we can save the tree (which is a volunteer and not part of the original landscape plan of
the building and grounds) or we can save the historic building. Without question we vote to save the
building. He went on to say that an effort to relocate the giant tree was explored.....and not viable as it would
cost several hundred thousand dollars and transplanting carries no guarantee of continued success for the tree..
There was also a rumor floating around that the primary reason for the tree removal was to create five parking
spaces........that is false as well.
I suggested that perhaps cuttings/slips of the tree could be offered to the public and given the hearty nature of
this tree variety we could wind up with several hundred "children" of this tree and it can be a legacy of fostering
the Tree City designation of our city. The Library and City are working with Preserve Orange County and at
their suggestion have hired a preservation architect to oversee the buildings renovation. This is a very smart
move to have hired these consultants.
While I am truly saddened to see any large tree be destroyed.....I now understand all the issues and vote for the
preservation of the structure.

Subject: URGENT: Save our Tree
Dear City Manager/Members of City Council,
I was forwarded correspondence from Janelle McLoughlin (ETAC commission member): I wish to voice my
objection, in the strongest possible terms, to the planned removal of a large tree adjacent to the city library on
Civic Center in downtown. If what I have heard is true, the reason for removing this magnificent tree which is
listed on the national Big Tree Index, is to facilitate a number of parking spaces-please tell me that this is some
form of a joke, designed to illicit a response from residents.
If this is indeed true, I am astounded that in 2023 with all of the knowledge that we have as a society and human
race about trees and their importance, that this decision could be made.
The city has a page on their website entitled `Santa Ana's Urban Forest"-link below:
Santa Ana's
Urban Forest t
-City of r
Santa Ana ' " Ak
SANTA •
One section within there includes a document which gives 10 reasons why trees are important: anyone involved
in this decision making process needs to visit that page and after reading that please tell us why a number of
parking spaces are more important-it defies common sense and reeks of small minded-ness. Could anyone draft
a document which states the reasons why parking spaces are of similar importance?Unlikely. This tree has been
here before any of us were alive, and if you act quickly, it will be here long after as well.
I am asking you, the leaders of the city and the representatives of the citizens, to urgently rethink this short-
sighted and narrow minded decision, for the love of nature and urban beauty.

Hi Terri
I was at the Carnegie Navigation Center on two separate occasions. The first the time I stayed at Carnegie I was
there for less than one day and then left. The second time I stayed at the Carnegie location in January I stayed
there for 13 days before I was evicted due to multiple "warnings" from the staff there.
I invite you to read my article, "The Fool" on Santa Ana Voices", and to ask to read the staff grievance reports I
filed against the staff members at the shelter.
https://shorturl.at/bitQO
I also would like to add that Carnegie's statement against me reporting "aggressive behavior" is false. On
another occasion, I was told by City Net staff(who spoke to the Carnegie shelter staff) that I was no longer
welcome at Carnegie due to a report of me "physically assaulting a staff member".
As of now I am currently waiting on a call back from the Santa Ana Navigation Center. I have had trouble
getting connected to them in the past (reasons why are listed in my article).
Respectfully,

You may want to try the Yale County Shelter that is also here in Santa Ana. All of their referrals go through
the Coordinated Entry System. Please contact 211 to learn how you can be placed on that list. In addition, you

Hi Councilmembers —
Right now I'm currently homeless (as an 24 year old latino social worker [unemployed] and
journalist) and wondering if you or anyone you know is able to offer some help with
housing/shelter services in Santa Ana?
I've exhausted all options with 211, Illumination Foundation, City Net, Mercy House, and
Orangewood. Most other programs I've encountered are for seniors and TAY 18-25 (1 turn 25 in
a week).
On a very serious note, I'm reaching out hoping someone is able to help me find connections to
housing/shelter. I've also tried connecting with Anaheim housing services however they told me
to "go back to Santa Ana [City Net]" since that is where my ties are.
Here is a direct link to my Iinkedin profile and my article "The Fool" published on Santa Ana

Dear Santa Ana Council Members,
We have a situation that needs to be brought to the attention of our City Management and City Council.
Santa Ana has an historic tree at the main library that is the largest Ficus Drupace tree in North America.
Please look at the enclosed link that verifies and certified this is the largest Ficus Drupace in North America.
https://californiabigtrees.caIpoly.edu/bt-tree-detail/548
Brian Sternberg, Executive Director of Library Services is rather new to Santa Ana and perhaps is not a long-time
resident of Santa Ana that has the same passion for our historic trees as we do.
Nabil Saba, Executive Director of Public Works, who said Santa Ana Public Works will manage the project and cut
down the tree, but they are definitely not the decision makers. The plan is to cut the tree down and replace with
five parking spaces.
The outside firm that the library has chosen to design the renovations, perhaps looks at this old tree just as that
"some old tree".
Please do not remove this landmark tree.It is shameful to remove this majestic and stately tree for 5 parking
spaces. Live trees in a city provide life in spite of all the concrete around the library and it contributes to the
historic value of our community.
Respectfully,
Christine Switzer

Earlier this afternoon I sent out a letter to all of you requesting to save the ficus tree at the library. Brian Sternberg called me
immediately and shared with me why the tree needed to be removed. I believe I was misinformed and I understand why this tree

needs to be removed. I really appreciate Brian calling me so quickly. Please ignore my first letter.
