Public Intoxication Initiative
August 15, 2023 SAPD starts Public Intoxication Initiative
Goals:
Focus on enforcement of existing laws pertaining to public intoxication
Directive to Patrol Division Personnel for unencumbered time & CFS
Provide educational material and resources to arrestees
Homelessness, Drug and alcohol abuse, & Mental health
Post-Arrest Resources
Considerations
Public intoxication may be a byproduct of mental health issues
Public intoxication may be a lesser and included offense to greater crimes
Officer retain discretion on enforcement
If arrested and charged on a greater offense, the public intoxication will not be a
chargeable offense and therefore not captured in statistical data
