REQUESTING "ON" AND "OFF" RAMPS TO CONNECT
SO~H ~IN STREET IN SANTA ANA WITH THE
NEWPORT FREEWAY
WHEREAS, after many years of Planning, the Orange County
Civic Center has been established adjacent to Main Street in Santa
Ana and millions of dollars have been spend in the acquisition of
land and in architectural and planning studies; the new multistory
court house is programed to start construction in 1966, to be
followed by a new jail and numerous other buildings, parking areas
and structures; the acquisition of land is continuing for the
location of a new city hall and sites for State and Federal
buildings in the hope that both the State and Federal governments
will locate their new structures in this expanding Civic Center
area; streets are being~widened and extended and new streets are
being located and constructed to allow vehicular access to and from
this governmental Civic Center; and
WHEREAS, direct access south to Newport Beach and to the
Coast Highway is as important as access to the north, east, and west,
and this access can be most easily provided by "on" and "off" ramps
to connect the southerly end of Main Street in Santa Ana with the
Newport Freeway.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA ANA that this Council hereby requests the California
Highway Commission and the Division of Highways of the Department
of Public Works of the State of California to provide a southbound
"on" ramp to connect South Main Street, near its intersection with
the Newport Freeway, to the southbound lanes of said Freeway, and
to provide a northbound "off" ramp from the Newport Freeway to
Redhill Avenue to afford.vehicular access northbound to the Civic
Center and southbound from the Civic Center of Orange County.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That said "on" and "off" ramps be
designed and constructed as a part of 'the interchange between the
San Diego Freeway and the Newport Freeway to provide these necessary
vehicular links to the governmental center of Orange County, the
most rapidly growing area in the United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: %~at copies of this Resolution be
sent to the California Highway Commission, the Division of Highways
of the Department of Public Works of the State of California, and
to the District Engineer of District VII, Department of Highways,
Post Office Box 2304, Los Angeles 54, California.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa
Ana at its regular meeting held on the 6th day of December, 1965.
