HomeMy WebLinkAbout67-102RESOLUTION 67-102 SUPPORTING THE LOCATION OF A FEDERAL BUILDING IN THE ORANGE COUNTY- SANTA ANA CIVIC CENTER WHEREAS, Orange County is now the second most populated county in the State of California with a population exceeding 1,250,000 persons; and WHEREAS, Orange County is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States with a growth rate exceeding 190 persons daily and an estimated population of 1,514,000 persons by 1970 and 2,343,000 persons by 1980; and WHEREAS, Orange County is the only metropolitan area in the United States today which is not served by any Federal Building; and WHEREkS, the City of Santa Ana, which is the County Seat for Orange County, and which had a population of 100,000 persons in 1960 and today has a population of over 145,000 persons, has experienced this same rapid growth and development which urgently require additional Federal facilities; and WHEREAS, the County of Orange has located its finance, engineering, health and welfare, court house, jail facilities and utilities buildings in the Orange County-Santa Ana Civic Center, which is described in the map attached hereto; and WHEREkS, the City of Santa Ana has located its police facilities building, central library, and stadium in the Orange County-Santa Ana Civic Center, and plans to locate its new City Hall in this center; and WHEREAS, said buildings represent a total public investment exceeding thirty-eight million dollars in local tax funds; and WHEREAS, all of the planning studies which have been prepared for the ultimate development of the center have clearly indicated the wisdom of centralizing all major public buildings, including a Federal Building, in this Civic Center for maximum efficiency of operation, economy of land use, and convenience for the public; and WHEREAS, the Federal Government could achieve substantial economies and greatly improve its services to the public by centralizing in this Civic Center many of its more than 25 facilities occupying approximately 100,000 square feet of space which are currently scattered throughout the City of Santa Ana. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana, California, that it supports and endorses the location of a Federal Building within or immediately adjacent to the Orange County-Santa Ana Civic Center; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that United States Senators Thomas H. Kuchel and George Murphy and Congressmen Richard T. Hanna and James B. Utt be sent a copy of this resolution and memorialized to initiate and support any measures to achieve the objectives set forth herein. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Board of Supervisors of Orange County, California, and the Civic Center Commission each be sent a copy of this Resolution and be requested to endorse and support this project.
