SURPLUS LAND ON EDINGER BY BUREkU OF PRISONS FOR CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION WHEREAS, the Federal Communications Commission has, for many years, occupied a parcel of land within the City limits of the City of Santa Ana; and WHEREAS, the FCC recently released a portion of its land holdings; and WIiEREAS, the City of Santa Ana acquired approximately 7.18 acres of said land for use as a City park, in conformity with the adopted General Plan for the City of Santa Aha and in conformity with a condition imposed by the Federal Government attendant upon said acquisition; and WHEREAS, the Santa Ana Unified School District acquired approximately 21.17 acres of said released land for the purpose of utilizing it as a site for elementary school and continuation school facilities; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Unified School District have been advised that the United States Department of Justice is endeavoring to acquire the remainder of the released property for the purpose of installing thereon a correctional and rehabilitation facility for juvenile offenders; and WHEREkS, the City of Santa Ana is, for its part, anxious that the remainder of said land be acquired by said City for use as a major area park in conformity with the General Plan of said City aforementioned; and WHEREAS, the Santa Ana Unified School District is of the firm belief that the installation of a penal or correctional facility adjacent to an educational institution would create an adverse physical environment which would detract from the effectivenss of the educational process; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City of Santa Ana hereby expresses its opposition to the acquisition by the United States Department of Justice of the remainder of the FCC - released property on West Edinger Street in the City of Santa Ana; and particularly to the proposed use of the land as a site for a correctional and rehabilitation facility for juvenile offenders; and proposes that said land be sold to the City of Santa Ana for use as a City park, a use in keeping with the adjoining educational facilities. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana at its regular meeting held on the 20th day of November, 1967.
