CITY OF SANTA ANA DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 30, 1969
AS BIBLE TRANSLATION DAY
WHEREAS, WYCLIFFE BIBLE TRANSLATORS,
far-reaching linguistic research foundation,
the City of Santa Ana; and
INC., the world's most
has its home base in
WHEREAS, this program is serving our own as well as twenty
other nations in a noble and unselfish way, bringing literacy and
the light of the written word to hundreds of tribes living in
out-of-the-way areas of the world in cultural isolation without
books or even an alphabet and much less the Bible; and
WHEREAS, this program of scientific research, literacy and
brotherly service includes the translation of portions of the most
universally recognized prize of our Western civilization, the Bible,
permitting us thus to use it as the non-sectarian symbol of a
program of science and service for once well nigh forgotten tribes;
and
WHEREAS, the translation of the Bible into these tribal
languages requires that an alphabet and a thorough grammatical
analysis of the language be produced, and results in an expansion
of literacy and an improvement of the cultural base of the
language groups affected; and
WHEREAS, this effort has cultural, economic, social, and
political significance separate from its spiritual value; and
WHEREAS, the more than 2000 linguistics and technical helpers
presently engaged in this labor of science and love need and
deserve our encouragement;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Santa Ana, on its own account, and for the citizens of the
City of Santa Ana designates the 30th day of September, 1969, as
Bible Translation Day and does hereby commend Wycliffe Bible
Translators, Inc. for its unstinting service to humanity.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa
Ana at its regular meeting held on the 15th day of September, 1969.
