HomeMy WebLinkAbout69-155RESOLUTION 69-155 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA URGING THE PRESIDENT AND THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE JUDICIARY TO TAKE STEPS TO ASSURE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND THE BASIC RIGHT TO EXPRESS A BELIEF IN GOD WHEREAS, during Christmastime, 1968, astronauts orbiting the moon chose to read Bible passages to express their belief in a Supreme Being; and WHEREAS, the signers of the Declaration of Independence expressly relied upon Divine Providence in forming these United States and recognized that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain rights; and WHEREAS, Article Three of the Constitution prohibits Congress from making any law prohibiting the free exercise of religion; and WHEREAS, the principle of the separation of church and state was never intended to deny the existence of God, or to curtail the expression thereof; and WHEREAS, certain persons representing a small minority of the people are attempting, through judicial processes, to impose unreasonable restrictions upon the majority by limiting their right to express their belief in God, indeed even to the point of prohibiting mentioning the existence of a Supreme Being; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the city of Santa Ana, california, does hereby urge the President, the Congress, and the Judiciary of the United States to take appropriate action to assure the citizens of the United States freedom to believe in God and freedom to exercise that belief.
