OF RESOLUTION NO. 58-28i TO ADD~CL~S
TITLE OF DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY II
WHEREAS, on November 3, 1958, the City Council passed and adopted
~9~9~.~9~_~8_-~y~ing and re-establishing the Basic Compensation
Plan f~r employe~siof the City of Santa Aha; and
WHEREAS, it is now desired to add a new class to the list of class
titles contained~in said Resolution No. 58-281, as amended, and to allocate
salary and~w~gaschedules thereto.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That Section 3 of Resolution No.
58-281, as ame~d~d, is he~t~v ,fu~the= amended ~y adding to Section ,3 thereof,
in p~oper alphabetical sequen~e,~ the following class title and salary range

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That this amendment shall take effect on

DEFINITION
Under supervision to perform assigned professional legal work of average
difficulty in research, consultation, court trial and hearings.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs necessary legal research in preparation for trial of both civil
and criminal cases and presents such cases in court. Studies, interprets,
and applies statutes, ordinances, court decisions, and legal opinions in
the preparation of formal opinions, briefs, and trial briefs; interviews
witnesses and prepares pleadings and other papers in connection with lsw-
suits, trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings. Makes decisions
concerning the advisability to prosecute, compromise, or dismiss c~vJl
litigation subject to approval of the City Attorney; conducts condemnations,
damage or other civil suits in all state and federal courts, including
appellate work. Interprets and furnishes information regarding City
ordinances, Charter provisions and the State codes; checks specifications,
contracts and special assessment proceedings. Answers legal questions of
citizens concerning city business, attends meetings of boards and commissions
as requested and gives legal advice and counsel. Performs related work as
assigned.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work of this class involves the assignment, of municipal legal work of
average difficulty. Employees work without detailed supervision and exercise
considerable independent judgement.
RECOM}~NDED BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
One and one-half years of full-time experience in the practice of public
corporation law and graduation from an accredited law school. Candidates
must have gained admission to the California State Bar Association. Experience
in general civil law may be substituted for public corporation law experience
on the basis of two months of general civil practice for one month of public
corporation practice. Special Stipulation: Private practice will not.be per-
mitted after appointment.
DESIRABLE KNO~%EDGE, SKIL.LS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of civil and criminal law, local law and ordinances of
established precedents and sources of legal reference. Thorough knowledge of
the principles, methods and practices of legal research and investigation.
Thorough knowledge of pleadings and practices of effective presentation of
court cases. Thorough knowledge o£ judicial procedures and the rules of
evidence. Ability to analyze legal documents and instruments. Ability to
appraise and organize facts and to present evidence and other material in
written or oral form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with other officials and employees of the City, court officials
and the general public.
