TITLE OF LEGAL SECRETARY

Resolution No. 58~281, revising and re-establishing the Basic Compensation
Plan for employees of the City of Santa Aha; and

salary and wage schedules thereto.

DEFINITION
Under direction, to perform a variety of complex, specialized legal clerical work;
to supervise other clerical personnel; and to do related work as required.
~XAMPLES OF DUTIES
Transcribes from dictation and prepares such legal documents as pleadings, briefs,
ordinances, condemnation proceedings~ resolutions~ complaints, dismissals~ Judgments,
depositions, affidavits and other legal matters; trains and distributes work to other
clerical personnel; maintains a file of correspondence and records; composes routine
correspondence independently; keeps the court calendar and appointment calendar; receives
calls and visitors and answers requests for general information; relieves supervisor
of routine administrative detail; performs related duties as assigned. -
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee assigned to this class performs responsible and difficult clerical work
requiring a knowledge of, and familiarity with legal terminology, forms, format and
procedures. Duties normally include some minor administrative activities and res-
ponsibility for independent action requiring the exercise of judgment in making
decisions in accordance with the policies and practices of the department. An
employee in this class normally reports directly to the department head and exercises
supervision over one or more employees assisting with the more routine clerical details.
MINIMUM BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Trainin~ and Experience: Completion of the twelfth grade, including courses in steno-
graphy, typing and office practice, and three years of experience in stenographic and
clerical work, two of which must have been at the legal secretarial, level, or some
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Ability to take shorthand at 100 words per minute and-~
ability to type at a corrected speed of 50 words per minute.
DESIRABLE K/~OWLEDGE~ SKILLS AND AGILITIES
Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation; knowledge of legal
terminology and legal format; knowledge of supervisory techniques; knowledge of modern
office methods, procedures and equipment; ability to follow oral and written directions;
ability to deal tactfully with the public and to establish and maintain effective working
relatioms with subordinates, the professional staff and the public.
