Communication was read from the Pl--ning C~ission rec~nding approval of varianc
of Eugene P. Schaefer to permit the use of property at 1~21-23 South Sycamore Street
for used car sales and service, subject to certain conditions. 0.:~,~,mication was
read fr~ Joseph M. Miller, on behalf of property owners of the 1~00 block South
Sycamore Street and petition signed by forty-two persons objecting tO the variance
for the reason that it will change their properties from the presen~ R-2 zone to a
c~*---rcl~al ~se and as Syc~re ~treet is used by large numbers of children going to
and frc~ the Spurgeon School and Julia Lathrop School, as well as the Parochial
School, it would create a hazardous condition if the used cars are driven in and out
of ~se premises onto Sycamore Street. Petition was read signed by 689 parents
of children attending St. ~'s School protesting the granting of the variance for
the reason that the proposed business wt.l] constitute a nuisance in that it will
hinder +.h~ operation of the school and the exhaust pipes of the cars, during their
daily warm-up period, would pour D-m-s into the enclosed and overcrowded playground
and also into the classro~, affecting the health of the children~ Mm.. Davis,
representing the applicant, stated that the property is within the plans of the
Council to provide business zoning betmeen C~presS asd Sycamore Streets and no
additional traffic hazards would be created and requested that the variance be
granted as recommended. Father Qminn of St. ~-~-'s ~hurch said the traffic I~oblem
should be considered. David ~eller said the traffic would bec~,e a problem and
requested'that the ~atter beheld in abeyance~ Numerous persons gave their reasons"
for opposing the used car lot such as traffic conditions, creating a hazard to the
school children and permitting co~ercial uses in a residential Eone. It was moved~!

On motion of Councilm~ B~inly, seconded by Markel and carried, Tentative Map of
Tract No. 1693, submitted by Aetna Develo~ut Company, on property located east of
Fairview Road-Greenville Street and between Na~vard and F~f-ger Streets, .consisting
of appro~tmatel~ 52 anres, was refe~;~d back to the subdivider for completion in
accordance with conditions as imposed by the Department of Public Works.

On motion of Counc~ma, Jexvw,~, seconded by Dehl and carried, proper officials were
authorized to e~ecute agreement with the Santa Ama City Employees Association, dated
March 19th, 1956, for the operation of the concession at the Municipal Bowl for a
period of one year with option to renew for four years.
On motion of Councilman Jer~m~, seconded by D=hl amd carried, Map of Tract No. 2323
submitted by Reach Cities Develol~nent Company, for the dedication of Willits .Street,
Myrtle Street, Raitt Street, Artesi& Street, .Nottimgham Avenue, Camile Place and +.~
alley a~d bond in the amount of $34,000,00 were approved, license pe~ment fee in the
sum of $2,100.00 accepted and the agreement covex~-S improvements was ordered signed.
