HomeMy WebLinkAbout77-035RESOLUTION NOo 77-35 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA URGING THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO RETURN TO PRIOR FORMULA OF 20% DISTRIBUTION OF TOTAL STATE SALES AND USE TAX REVENUES COLLECTED BY THE STATE AND DISTRIBUTED TO CITIES WHEREAS, the State of California in 1974 increased the State Sales and Use Tax from 5~ to 6~ a 20% increase; and WHEREAS, Santa Ana's and other cities' share of the State Sales and Use Tax remained at 1~, thus, in effect, re- ducing the cities' share from 20% to 16-2/3% of the total Sales and Use Tax revenues; and WHEREAS, Santa Ana and other California cities have increasingly found themselves with shortages of general fund revenues; and WHEREAS, the State has continued to impose mandated costs upon cities, thus even further overburdening existing general fund revenues; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Santa Ana urges the State Legislature to pass legis- lation providing that the share of State Sales and Use Tax rev- enues distributed to cities be returned from 16-2/3% to 20%; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana that the Clerk of the Council is hereby authorized and instructed to transmit copies of this resolution to State legislators representing the City of Santa Ana as well as to the League of California Cities and the City Councils of each city in Orange County.
