A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA ANA PROCLAIMING
AUGUST 26, 1978 AS "TREASURES OF CYPRUS DAY"
WHEREAS,
in the spirit of international brotherhood, THE REPUBLIC
OF CYPRUS has graciously joined the United States of
America in this country's Bictentennial; and
WHEREAS,
as a tribute to this historic event, THE REPUBLIC OF
CYPRUS, in conjunction with The Smithsonian Institution
Traveling Exhibition Service, has sent a remarkable
collection of one hundred and seventy-eight objects
of ancient art to the City of Santa Ana; and
WHEREAS,
archaeological excavations during the last one hundred
years have uncovered evidence of rich and diverse cul-
tures which existed in Cyprus as early as 5800 B.C.; and
WHEREAS,
nearly eight millenia are represented in this exhibition,
beginning with the oldest period in the Island's pre-
history, the Neolithic, and ending with nineteenth
century folk objects; and
WHEREAS,
among the ancient treasures to be seen in the exhibition
are stone bowls~ dating from about 5800 B.C., from
Khirokitia, the earliest known Neolithic settlement
in THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS; a clay cylinder from the
Late Bronze Age site of Enkomi which manifests traces
of what appears to be a still undeciphered Cyro-Minoan~
script; over two dozen examples of pottery from nearly
every period of Cypriot culture since 2300 B.C.; and
WHEREAS, included are jugs, tankards, bowls, pitchers, amphorae
and even a baby's rattle dating from about 1500 B.C.; and
WHEREAS,
in addition to the substantial selection of pottery,
TREASURES OF CYPRUS boasts small bronze stands or
tripods, a bone stylus, terra cotta figurines, small
sculptures of limestone and marble, a pair of exquisitely
modeled gold earrings from the Roman period and several
glazed bowls from the Medieval period;
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City
of Santa Ana, on behalf of the City, and the citizens of
the City, does hereby proclaim August 26, 1978, as:
"TREASURES OF CYPRUS DAY"
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the City of Santa Aha does warmly
invite the people of Southern California to help the
City celebrate this distinguished exhibition at the
Bowers Museum from August 26, to October 8, 1978.
